Our Story
We live in frozen whiteness for most of the year. We walk along a shoreline and look at time standing still in the waves, stiff in ice. Rude wind cuts our soul’s heat. Our fingers, numb and useless, fumble to share our art vision with this place we call home.

We live in Churchill, a remote community of 800 people on the rocky coast of Hudson Bay, at the end of the rail line and an airplane pit-stop. This isolation requires the community to be self-reliant and resilient, as harsh weather events often challenge town infrastructure and maintenance.
Although the town has all the basic amenities, many services are limited, including for the arts.
Churchill Creative Collective consists of residents of Churchill working together to promote the wellness of our community. We want to encourage positive living through art & self-expression. We want to learn from each other and inspire members of our community.
We wanna make art shit happen!

We love colour!
We’ve chosen orange/yellow, green and purple. Our open sky sunsets burst into blood orange and gold. When the land springs back after a long winter, the green vegetation and smell of the earth are invigorating. Our hasty 6-week summer begins when a tiny purple flower suddenly blooms underfoot, even while snow lays on the ground.
We love nature!
Churchill living— on this land and sky is like living on an artist’s paint palette. During the winter, when ferocious blizzard winds blow snow to invisibility with minus 50 windchill, it’s truly amazing to suddenly catch a ball of blazing orange through the white haze as the setting sun appears through a crack in the storm. Nights with a full moon are so illuminating on the snow that you feel like it is daylight. During the long dark nights of deep cold, when every piece of moisture is sucked frozen, we get clear skies.
Then we experience nature’s greatest art jam: aurora borealis. The stunning light display of dancing purple and green will make your heart dazzle, and your soul shake. In the summer, when the river and ocean are finally free to flow, the water landscape is constantly swirling with the tides and big winds. We feel drawn to the shape of a circle because it very much encapsulates the drama of our cycling season, the sun, the waves, the moon and the ribbons of aurora.
We love flowers!
When the snow finally melts, the land rapidly explodes into colour with remarkable tundra flowers. There are 5 varieties of purple ones, like Saxifrage and Fireweed. Many flowers grow right in the rocks and sand, having interesting adaptations to grow in these challenging habitats. Then there’s the Mountain Aven, a white & yellow flower that covers the tundra in a magic fairyland. Tiny hairs on the underside of its leaf capture sunlight and create its own greenhouse. Once in bloom, the Aven flower follows the sun as the long daylight hours can maximize it’s growth. Avens are important seasonal indicators. The seeds twist into little dreadlocks. Then the dreadies open up into a ball of white shimmery floof, to get blown away by early chilly fall winds.
The tundra is also surprisingly fruitful. Carpet-sized plants grow wild edible berries like blueberry and cranberry. We feel our identity is similar to the tundra flowers, our growth as a collective, and our desire for grassroots local art, to flourish like Avens.
Our Mission & Vision
-
Our Mission
To engage and showcase local artists, crafters and creative thinkers for the benefit of the Churchill community.
-
Our Vision
Inspiring creativity by building on local arts and culture to grow community wellness.
Our History
The Churchill Creative Collective began as a small group of people in the spring of 2016 to organize a community art show. We wanted to create a performance event to uplift performers. We wanted to entertain an active audience, not just obliging parents watching their shy, unprepared children. To support our local performers, we did a dress rehearsal and sound check.
We set up a central stage with theatre-style seating for the audience. We sought to create venue ambiance with lighting and decorations. We also wanted everyone involved to feel inspired to promote art as a positive personal and community activity. This first event was the Summer Solstice Community Arts Show.
After our first successful show, organizers and other people with art in their hearts brainstormed and discussed starting a community arts group. We wanted all art forms showcased. By art, we include all forms of creativity: drawing/painting, sewing, writing, dance, music, crafts, theatre, up-cycling, gardening, cooking, photography, creative thinking, etc! This meeting would be the first of many, hammering out all the details to become legitimate: scheduled meetings, taking minutes, writing by-laws, forming a board of directors and all kinds of boring administrative paperwork. We created our mission & vision statements as well as a master list of all our projects and goals.
We incorporated as a non-profit in 2018 with our legal name, Churchill Creative Collective Community Arts and Cultural Cooperatives Inc. Of course, the name is long and complicated because our key members are a complex bunch, multi-talented and multi-tasking. Since Churchill’s life is seasonal, so are our jobs and lives. Our president is a mother, works two jobs, sits on community groups and still has the energy to splash paints on canvas. Our vice president renovates houses, plays guitar and runs an entertainment company. Our treasurer operates diesel machines, does mechanics and plays piano. Our secretary makes soap, skidoos in the bush, and works on community empowerment. Our events coordinator ran a hotel & restaurant, and beads earrings & sews leather. Some members have their own art-based home businesses.
One thing we share is our love for this community and our commitment to bringing wellness and inspiration through art to the people of Churchill.
